Last week, Dorset Fire and Rescue Service saw eight young people pass out after another successful SPARC (Safer People And Responsible Communities) course. The course, which was based at Dorchester fire station, allowed the students to learn basic firefighting skills, first aid and participate in team building activities. The students are referred to the course through partner agencies such as schools, youth offending teams and learning centres. Rosemary Locock, Education Officer for Dorset Fire and Rescue Service said: “This intensive week long course has allowed these young people, and many others before them, to work hard and start to turn their lives around.
The Adventures of Andy Kershaw: An Evening With The Legendary Broadcaster and Foreign Correspondent “Andy Kershaw’s ‘No Off Switch’ is sensational. An amazing read. An amazing man.” – Stephen Fry. Andy Kershaw, one of the UK’s most decorated broadcasters, will be appearing in conversation about his life and widely acclaimed autobiography ‘No Off Switch’ at venues across the UK from February 9th 2012. Having already lived 10 lives to everyone else’s one, Andy Kershaw truly has no off switch. As a teenager he was promoting major rock gigs. He was Billy Bragg’s driver and roadie one day and presenting Whistle Test and Live Aid the next. Andy has won numerous awards throughout his career working for Radio 4 and for 15 years Radio 1, where he shared an office with John Peel. More recently a presenter on Radio 3, he has also worked for the Rolling Stones and Bruce Springsteen. His record collection weighs seven tons! Rochdale, where he was born in 1959, triggered in Andy a curiosity he has never lost. Musically, his horizons were opened up by an early obsession with Bob Dylan. Tracing Dylan’s influences led Andy towards folk, blues, country, soul and gospel. He went to Leeds [...]

Police in Bournemouth are appealing for witnesses and anyone with information to come forward after a woman died following a road traffic collision in Southbourne. The incident, in which a woman sustained chest injuries while alighting from a bus along Southbourne Grove, took place at approximately 11.55am on Tuesday 31 January 2012. The victim, 76-year-old Bridget Carmel Buckley from the Bournemouth area, was taken to hospital and sadly passed away on 5 February. An inquest was opened and adjourned on 8 February by the coroner for Bournemouth, Poole andEast Dorset who determined the cause of death to be bronchopneumonia and surgical emphysema as a result of Mrs Buckley’s injuries. The vehicle involved was a single decker Yellow Bus that was travelling along Route 31 prior to the incident. No other vehicles were involved in the incident. PC Sarah Jones, of Dorset Police’s Traffic Unit, said: “I am keen to hear from anyone who may have witnessed the number 31 Yellow Bus travelling along Southbourne Grove at around the time of the collision. “I would also appeal to those persons travelling on the bus who may have witnessed the incident to contact Dorset Police.” The incident was reported [...]

This year’s BikeSafe course dates have been revealed, with courses being run across the county to help make motorcyclists even safer on the road. The BikeSafe course is available to anyone who rides a bike with an engine size of at least 250cc and riders are encouraged to book their place soon as the dates filled up quickly last year. The courses are run in two parts over a weekend. The first part runs on the Saturday from 10am to 4pm and consists of a theory presentation which highlights the causes of accidents and the theory of advanced riding. The second part of the course is an assessed ride which will take place on the Sunday between either 9am and 12 midday or 1pm and 4pm. The course is subsidised by Dorset County Council, which means that the course fee is just £20 for the second year in a row. The course fee was £40 in 2010. There are six courses being run from April to October at Wimborne, West Bay and North Dorset. Police Constable Chris Smith, BikeSafe Co-ordinator, said: “Even the most experienced bikers could learn something on the BikeSafe course that may one day save [...]

The number of trees planted in a new community woodland in Weymouth has reached 1000, thanks to the help of hundreds of local volunteers. Now Dorset Wildlife Trust and Dorset Countryside are inviting people to help plant the remaining new trees this month. Native trees, including oak, ash, hawthorn and hazel, have been planted around the edge of Horselynch Plantation (known locally as Teddy Bear Woods), to enlarge the woodland for wildlife and people. The new area of woodland is part of the mitigation package for the Weymouth Relief Road and will continue to be open access for the public, while creating valuable habitat for wildlife including great-spotted woodpeckers, noctule bats and butterflies. Amazing support from locals Local school and college students from Bincombe Valley, St Andrews, Westfield, St Laurence & St Nicholas and Kingston Maurward planted around 300 trees and the remaining 700 were planted by local residents, during two very successful Community Tree Planting Events over the last two months. “We’ve had two really fantastic events,” said Samantha Dallimore, Community Conservation Officer for Dorset Wildlife Trust. “I’ve been amazed by how many local people have turned out and the support from the local residents using the area. We’ve [...]

Pupils from the Priory School in Christchurch were the latest to benefit from the education programme run by the Christchurch Food Festival Education Trust when they tried out German and Egyptian recipes. Every primary school in Christchurch is being visited by a team from the Education Trust comprising Food Festival President, Mary Reader, along with chefs Ian Hewitt and Susan Spooner. In each school they come up with recipes from the country which the pupils are studying so that their visit is relevant to the school’s curriculum. At the Priory School some of the pupils were studying Germany following the Second World War so Mary Reader invited Thomas Huber, General Manager of Christchurch Harbour Hotel, who comes from Germany, to come along and show the pupils some authentic German recipes. Following the demonstration the pupils got to try out the recipes for themselves and were soon hard at work making herring salad and sauerkraut stew. Other pupils were studying Egypt so they got a chance to try cooking a Feta cheese salad, lemon and coriander hummus and a fish tagine. The Mayor of Christchurch, Cllr Sue Spittle, visited the students cooking the Egyptian dishes and was [...]

Below is a letter from the Chief Constable of Dorset Police Mr Martin Baker and Chairman of the Dorset Police Authority Mr Michael Taylor. All of the reports for the Police Authority meeting held on Thursday, 9 February 2012 are available on the Police Authority website. Dear Stakeholder POLICE AUTHORITY BUDGET 2012/13 At its meeting today the Dorset Police Authority approved its Three Year Strategy (2012/15) and the Annual Policing Plan and Force budget for 2012/131. The Authority’s decision to accept the offered one-off Council Tax Protection Grant means that the policing precept will remain at £180 per year for a Band D property for the third year in a row. This was one of the most difficult decisions the Authority has ever had to make and members faced the significant challenge of balancing the desire to keep the Council Tax low while simultaneously ensuring Dorset Police is adequately resourced to meet the needs of the public in the context of reducing central funding. In making their decision, members expressed particular concern at the one-off nature of the freeze grant this year and called for continuing representations to Government for the offered additional funding to be sustained in future years.
